SYNOPSIS

During the communist dictatorship in Romania (1945-1989), thousands of people risked their lives in the attempt to run away from the country. Despair made them invent the most incredible methods to cross the border illegally. Some of them managed to escape, but many lost their lives in these attempts.

OXYGEN is a free reenactment of such a real case: a man who tried to cross the Danube illegally using an oxygen cylinder.

Yet, the facts are reinterpreted in a highly subjective vision. On the border between fiction, documentary and visual art, the film depicts an emotional landscape, a man’s inner journey towards a healing hereafter.

Some of them managed to escape, but many lost their lives in these attempts.

OXYGEN is a free reenactment of such a real case: a man who tried to cross the Danube illegally using an oxygen cylinder.

Yet, the facts are reinterpreted in a highly subjective vision. ONOn the border between fiction, documentary and experiment, blending beautifully shot fiction and strange archive footage, in visuals and sounds of haunting quality, the film depicts an emotional landscape, a man’s inner journey towards a healing hereafter.

Screening schedule:

Friday 29 January 19:30 Pathe 2

Saturday 30 January 11:45 Lantaren 1

Now at its 39th edition, the International Film Festival Rotterdam is considered one of the top five European film festivals, alongside Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Locarno. Its main focus is the discovery and the active support of new talented filmmakers from around the globe. IFFR offers to its public and professional audiences ( over 3.000 press and film industry representatives) a quality selection of worldwide independent, innovative and experimental cinema as well as film-related visual arts exhibitions and live performances.

SYNOPSIS

During the communist dictatorship in Romania (1945-1989), thousands of people risked their lives in the attempt to run away from the country. Despair made them invent the most incredible methods to cross the border illegally. Some of them managed to escape, but many lost their lives in these attempts.

OXYGEN is inspired by such a real case: a man who tried to cross the Danube illegally using an oxygen cylinder.

Yet, the facts are reinterpreted in a highly subjective vision. Blending beautifully shot fiction and strange archive footage, in visuals and sounds of haunting quality, the film depicts an emotional landscape, a man’s inner journey towards a healing hereafter.
